Abstract

The paper highlights the issues of utilizing WebQuest in English language teaching/learning, focusing on its updated concept, tasks/objectives and innovations which eventually lead to the introduction of WebQuest 2.0. The authors dwell on Tom March’s new vision of WebQuest who defines it as a process that motivates students’ thinking and creativity by employing new opportunities offered by the internet. This process begins with the Engagement phase which stimulates learners’ motivation to complete real-life-like task, progresses though the Brainstorming phases which activates critical thinking and ability to seek solutions to problems. Both phases result in offering students a variety of Learning Paths which they choose according to their capacity, learning style, and teamwork. However, WebQuest still has a number of tasks to solve in order to empower the citizens of the 21st century to handle the workplace situations. WebQuest should aim to reach a higher and more productive level of teamwork along with stimulating the project team to think critically and creatively, be able to find innovative solutions to problems they might encounter in professional life. The paper describes the WebQuest created by authors to teach prospective economists’ English monologue, providing its Central task and one of its sections, ‘language workshop’, specifically devised to foster business English learning. They discuss the mismatch between WebQuest’s major task to build learners’ autonomy and the rigid structure which predetermines teachers’ step-by-step guidance of the process. The authors advocate restructuring WebQuest, which may promote more flexible and well-balanced collaboration between learners and teachers as well as overall effectiveness of the method.
