Abstract
The topicality of this work is determined by increasing interest in free and open source software (FOSS), including Linux free distributives, in education, science and business. It creates the need for formation of students' skills for working with FOSS repositories. This paper aims to investigate FOSS repositories and their application while teaching operating systems and system programming, in particular a worldview role of repositories in the training of future IT-professionals. The concepts of FOSS, free software etc. are specified. The materials of this paper could be used while preparing the methodical support of 'Operating Systems and System Programming' course and other similar courses.
