Abstract

At the current stage of the information society, the effectiveness of solving various applied tasks in cartography and geoinformatics depends on the competencies of specialists capable of using software tools that simulate and replicate human cognitive processes in a computer environment. These tools, based on artificial intelligence, have been at the core of computing technologies for nearly seventy years, driving various levels of automation in cartographic work while continuously evolving with advancements in science and technology. This is illustrated by the chronological model developed by the authors, which outlines the stages of artificial intelligence development, highlights technological shifts in the creation and use of maps, and examines its role in the education of future cartography and geoinformatics specialists.

An analysis of the potential applications of such tools has enabled their classification based on the functionality of applied software, including geographic information systems, image processing and transformation programs (modules), and specialized software products. These tools are identified as artificial intelligence systems, which today must be characterized by multimodality – meaning the ability to process and integrate different types of data, such as graphical, tabular, textual information, and others, simultaneously. It is emphasized that final decision-making based on the integrated application of artificial intelligence in cartography and geoinformatics should be carried out exclusively by specialists with the necessary expertise.

The potential for positive impact of artificial intelligence systems on the training of future specialists in Ukraine’s only bachelor’s program in “Cartography, Geographic Information Systems, Earth Remote Sensing” at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is estimated at 33%. This reflects a high level of applied software utilization in the educational process and its role in shaping students’ professional competencies.
