Abstract

The article highlights aspects of the competence-based approach implementation in the training of future ship’s commanding officers. The example of teaching ship management at the Kherson State Maritime Academy (KSMA) presents new directions for implementing competence-based approach in the study of vocational subjects, ensuring that the training process of maritime professionals with the requirements of the Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping Convention as amended. The system of professional training of future navigators in the Academy and the Maritime College of KSMA is offered, the basic professional competences and the system of their evaluation are defined. Improving the standards of training of future navigators is due to the rapid updating and complication of technical, computer systems in navigation, while enhancing the role of the human factor in ensuring the preservation of human life. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) imposes certain requirements for immediate changes in the teaching of vocational subjects in the training of future maritime professionals providing adequate modern training equipment with training and methodological support. The article deals with the main issues of implementation of virtual reality simulation technologies in combination with e-learning in the training of future ship navigators. Virtual reality simulators, presented by modern laboratories at KSMA, provide cadets with the skills to maneuver the ship, increase the realism of training and provide new opportunities for the formation and assessment of the professional competencies of future maritime professionals. The article analyzes the comparative aspects of traditional education and training using virtual reality simulation technologies and concludes that the simulation technologies are being implemented effectively in the educational process. E-learning system based on LMS Moodle is introduced to provide IT support and training for future ship navigators.
