Abstract

The article makes an attempt to research the issue on the formation of prospective journalists’ information and communication competence as an important indicator of highly qualified specialists. It also examines the meaning of the term “information and communication competence of a journalist”, as well as its topicality in information society. It shows scientific points of view of a specified issue. The article also proves the importance and necessity of information and communication competence formation in the process of prospective journalists training. Journalist’s information and communication competence is defined as the ability to use information and communication technologies in professional activities; the skill to find the information from various sources, critically evaluate, analyze, reproduce and pass it to others. Moreover, information and communication competence is the ability to solve any information issues related to professional activity based on obtained knowledge, and the ability to work in the information environment successfully and contribute to the society. Based on the analysis of research works and their own pedagogical experience, the authors develop the model for the formation of prospective journalists’ information and communication competence. The paper also outlines the purpose, main objectives, educational tools and methods, outcomes, as well as it identifies structural components of information and communication competence, namely motivational and valuable, cognitive and active, functional and objective, behavioral, reflective and projecting, and evaluative components. The article highlights that the main issue in the process of formation of prospective media specialists’ information and communication competence is their preparation for professional activity in information society, effective participation in community life which requires the development of creative abilities, as well as self-realization and an artistic self-expression.
